§ 2.1.4.2 Ticker Tapes and Public Interest in Stock Prices

Throughout this period, the information technology needed for securities trading improved.¹³⁵ Newspaper reporting of securities prices became more frequent and better organized.¹³⁶ Telegraph networks were available by the 1840s, and with that it was possible to monitor markets and place trades from a distance.¹³⁷ This was followed in 1867 by the ticker, which operated as a printing telegraph that broadcast price quotations on ticker tapes received in brokers' offices.¹³⁸ The ticker quotes created a sensation.¹³⁹ By the late 1880s, over 3,000 tickers were dispersed throughout the country and could be found in brokers' offices, banks...
