§ 1.1.2.1 The National Labor Scene. Unions existed as early as 1800.2 Around 1850, unions began concentrating on the now traditional goals of higher wages, shorter workdays, and increased job security.3 The Industrial Revolution, under way during Arizona's territorial days, spawned a national labor movement. The National Labor Union, the first of its kind, was founded in 1866. It failed to survive.4 The Noble and Holy Order of the Knights of Labor, formed in the early 1870s, attempted to create a national general union embracing skilled and nonskilled workers.5 By the mid-1880s it had approximately 700,000 members.
