Which watch? does wearable tech belong in your practice?

Forgive me for being a couple minutes late to the Apple Watch and Android watch party, but other than the novelty of the products, the latest wearable technology has not sparked all that much interest for me. As a marathoner, I'm a huge proponent of tracking every workout and analyzing opportunities to change behaviors in search of higher performance.

That being said, I've found it difficult to find an opportunity to bring this technology into the workplace.

My wife will you tell you that I'm engrossed in my iPhone 95 percent of the day. I need fewer distractions, not more. I use two functions on the Garmin that I wear while I work out on a regular basis: pace and time. The other features like text message, heart rate analysis and stride length I find to be onerous and only useful when I'm not working out (and please forgive me for referring to Apple over Android--I happen to be an Apple user).

As the Apple Watch and Android watch are the two most popular wearable techs in professional settings, I'm working on convincing myself why I should buy one this fall to build efficiencies for next year. Here is what I have come up with.

Text Messaging and Emails

* Pro: I can now discreetly look at my text messages and emails that come in while I'm in the middle of a meeting.

* Con: I'm not smooth enough to be in a meeting and not have a reaction to the message that I received. All of a sudden, I'm no longer paying attention to my meeting, but rather my messages.

Paying Bills

* Pro: I love ApplePay! I wish the credit card chip would go away. Now I don't have to take my phone out to use ApplePay! #winning

* Con: 20 percent of my top 10 vendors allow me to use ApplePay. Unfortunately, the adoption of this payment method has been very limited.

Tracking Fitness

* Pro: I can get accurate information on how much exercise I receive during the day without having to carry my phone everywhere
