An appeal heard Wednesday in Kansas City could determine if a private arbitrator can rule on matters involving the unauthorized practice of law.

Lawsuits throughout the state allege that dealerships engaged in the unauthorized practice of law when they charged fees to prepare documents in the course of a car sale. Although the fees are relatively small, the Missouri Merchandising Practices Act allows treble damages, as well as punitive damages and attorney fees.
