Voice Recognition Systems and Software
73723829INDUSTRY SNAPSHOTBy the millenium, voice recognition (or speech recognition) systems had come into their own, taking hold in a number of industries that for years had looked upon the technology with a just-around-the-corner gaze. By improving on error rates in the translation of natural-voice input, voice recognition (VR) technology finally became efficient enough to enjoy widespread application and was poised to explode. According to Information Systems Auditor,"DataMonitor predicts that the voice business will grow quickly to 2007 by which time the whole market (including platforms, enabling software, applications and services) will be worth $4.33 billion."The uses for voice recognition (VR) systems and software are many and expanding quickly. One of the most prominent and established applications for VR technology is in the enhancement of office productivity. Several technologies are on the market allowing for quick and accurate voice dictation and for voice-based computer controls. Industrial applications afford companies streamlined inventory management and order processing.VR systems are also an element of the biometrics industry, generating high level security systems through voice-based identification and verification. Banks and similar institutions were busily installing VR systems into their customer call centers, cutting down the account verification process. The convergence of wireless and other remote technologies with Internet applications also pushed the development of VR software for verification with electronic commerce. The Internet in fact played an enormous role in speeding the growth of the VR systems and software industry. As more and more people began to place a premium on perpetual connectivity, the rapidly changing work environment and...See the full content of this document
