Twelve reasons for collaboration between departments of correction and child support enforcement agencies.

Authors Note: This article was prepared with the support of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation. The underlying research on the child support status of incarcerated and paroled parents was funded by grants from the federal Office of Child Support Enforcement for state child support enforcement agencies in Colorado, Illinois and Massachusetts.

Why should a state prison or department of corrections want to know if an inmate has children? More to the point, why should prison authorities be concerned if an inmate is part of the state child support enforcement (CSE) agency caseload? There is a largely unknown intersection between incarcerated parents and CSE programs and some states are addressing the problems that arise from having parents in prison who do not meet their child support responsibilities.
