The Corporate 100: Alaska's engines of diversity: Powerhouse companies keep Alaska's economy stable.

With the U.S. facing an economic downturn this year, and possibly a full-blown recession next, Alaskans look on with fear, or the very least trepidation.

Will it impact Alaska?

Will it affect my business?

Will it impact me?

The answers are unknown, and questioned often by business leaders and economists, especially with a slowdown in oil production at a time gas line negotiations are crawling.

"I don't have a crystal ball, and I can't predict Alaska's fate," said Jim Martin, ABM vice president and general manager. "But I do know one thing. For the moment, at least, we are fairing well and Alaska's future looks full of promise if we can move forward with the development of our natural resources, which provide a trickle-down impact to the businesses that support it."

The 100 companies on this list bring testimony to that statement. These are some of the largest companies in the state, or at minimum produce a huge impact. They are diversified, have large work forces, provide salaries and benefits to their employees, give back to the community, and in many cases have a worldwide presence.

"These companies are Alaska's economic engines, engines of diversity," said Vern McCorkle, publisher of ABM. "They are what drive our economy. They are large international companies and locally owned companies. They are Big Oil. They are fishing. They are mining. They are the companies that put food on our table, truck materials in for housing, construct our commercial entities, finance loans to small and large businesses, and make Alaska what it is today. With them, and others like them, we likely can survive a national recession without huge impact to Alaska. These are the companies that pay local and state taxes, and pay for our state economy."

Across the U.S., according to a Wells Fargo Economic Indicators report (January 2008), unemployment rates will rise, consumers will spend less, business spending will slow and residential housing market will continue to be problematic this year.

In Alaska, according to the Anchorage Economic Development Corp. and other sources, unemployment rates for Alaska's largest city are down, and the residential housing market is stable and the consumer price index has only grown by 1.5 percent, meaning more purchasing power for individuals and businesses.

"Consumers wake up with a hangover," screams Economic Indicators about the Lower 48, but in Alaska, boasts the AEDC, about 1,000 new jobs will be added to the Anchorage economy this year and the state's largest city is in its 19th consecutive year of job growth. Other major communities, such as Fairbanks and the Mat-Su Valley, are also seeing promise through development and increased population.

"The Corporate 100 was created to celebrate Alaska's rich diversity, and the growth to the state provided by companies such as these leaders on this prestigious listing," said Martin. "While it is a honor to be included on the list, we consider it a privilege for these companies to be doing business in our state."

"Again, they are the engines of diversity in what was once an oil-based economy," said McCorkle. "Oil and gas is certainly needed in this state, but through other industries, such as Native business, tourism, construction, communications/technology, health care, retail and wholesale trade, transportation and other segments of industry, we can power full-steam ahead with hope and promise for Alaska's future."
