The California Dept. of Corrections established a special energy unit in 1992 to help reduce the state's ballooning energy budget, which had reached $75 million. The new unit began to educate correctional facilities officials of their important role in energy conservation.In addition, it began to develop new energy conservation programs, primarily focusing on the reduction of lighting and motor costs. The energy unit also initiated inquiries on alternative sources of energy.

California creates special unit to conserve energy, save money.

The California Department of Corrections (CDC) has the third largest utility budget in state government, exceeding $75 million a year. This amount will continue to increase as new prisons are built and activated. In 1992 the department's Planning and Construction Division created an Energy Unit charged with minimizing the rate of increase of the department's electric and natural gas utility costs.
