A growing public awareness of mental disorders between 1970 and 1992 led to a significant increase in the number of these establishments, and in the range of services they provided. U.S. Census Bureau figures revealed the total number of psychiatric hospitals in the United States peaked by 1992, with 919 establishments in operation—an increase of nearly 17 percent over the 1987 figure.
