The author relates a cautionary tale -- remember that reputation and integrity are an attorney's most valuable commodities. The author and his adversary commenced an action seven years ago against an individual for her failure to pay for hospital services rendered nearly a decade ago. The process server personally served her, in-hand, but she never answered. The hearing was scheduled for the fifth time. The day before the hearing the court received a telephone call requesting another adjournment due to actual engagement. The Judge immediately denied the application to vacate the judgment, upheld service, issued an order for a sanction hearing and recommendation that the adversary attorney be punished severely. It is unknown at the time of this writing if he was disbarred or suspended.
