An employer didn't foster a hostile environment by failing to do more than issue verbal reprimands when responding to initial reports of racial harassment in the workplace, the 1st Circuit has ruled in affirming a summary judgment.

The plaintiff is an African-American who worked for the defendant, an electrical contractor. The plaintiff sued for hostile work environment under Title VII, alleging that co-workers regularly used racial slurs like "nigger" and "Aunt Jemima" on the job.
