An employer could not enforce a release of claims signed by former workers who sued the company for age discrimination, a U.S. District Court in Minnesota has ruled.

The plaintiffs are 59 former Guidant employees whose employment was terminated in 2004 as part of a reduction in force. In exchange for receiving severance benefits, Guidant asked each plaintiff to release it from employment-related claims, including claims under the Age Discrimination Employment Act.
