Credit Research Foundation, National Summary of Domestic Trade Receivables for the first quarter of 2006 showed Days Sales Outstanding expanding to 41.21 days from 40.54 days for the fourth quarter of 2005 and 40.75 days from the first quarter of 2005. This was an unfavorable trend from the perspective of a credit manager but a favorable trend from the viewpoint of a collection agency. Account placement or accounts placed for collection with collection agencies is simply the past due accounts that customers of collection agencies place with them for collection. The first quarter of the year is usually the quarter that has the highest account placement both in terms of the number and dollar amount of accounts placed. For those involved in collections and accounts receivable management, account placement is an important measure. It is akin to a company measuring its sales performance. Account placement is the grist that collection agencies convert into revenue through their collection efforts.
