An unusual trial strategy helped convince a Platte County jury to award $8 million to the family of a girl who suffered permanent brain injuries in a rear-end car crash.

The Oct. 24, 2007, crash in northern Kansas City caused the vehicle's front seat to collapse onto 2-year-old Aaliyah Marie George, who was sitting in an infant seat behind the driver. Aaliyah's mother, Sally J. George, of St. Marys, Ga., was a passenger in the car that was stopped at a red light when it was struck from behind.
