The experience of local wars and large-scale counter-terrorist operations convinced commands of the armed forces of the United States and other NATO countries that warfare in urban conditions merits closer attention. They argue that accelerating urbanization across the world makes this even more urgent.
Experts agree that by 2025, 60 to 70 percent of the world's population will live in urban environments; indeed, if the current global demographic trends continue many areas will acquire agglomerations of cities with populations of 10m and more.
