The American Institute of CPAs from 1980-1995
The America Institute of CPAs has seen many changes from 1980 to 1995 driven by technology, globalization, greater information needs, tax law changes, competition and an evolving work force. The AICPA has worked to ensure top people enter the profession and that they are properly trained. It has been active in developing standards that better meet client needs and investor expectations. Fifteen years of meeting the challenges.
Shortly after I was elected president of the Institute, it became apparent that to move forward we needed a new mindset and a fresh perspective on how to accomplish our goals. We needed to understand not only what was currently being demanded of us, but also what would be expected from us in the future. And we needed to recognize how we, as a profession and as CPAs individually, could prepare to meet those expectations. The time had come to anticipate change, rather than merely respond to it.
A future issues committee was appointed to determine and study those areas having the greatest impact on the accounting profession. The committee identified a variety of issues affecting CPAs, their clients or employers and the Institute itself - and it propelled us into action. As a result of its work and recommendations, an ongoing strategic planning committee was formed and a formal mission statement adopted.
