Summary
Virginia, for example, requires all state agencies and institutions constructing buildings at least 5,000 square feet in size to be built with energy performance standards at least as stringent as LEED or the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star rating system. There are currently 138 state government buildings in the U.S. with LEED certification, representing some 20 million square feet of space, said Jason Hartke, director of advocacy and public policy for the U.S. Green Building Council.
