Historically, the appointment to warden or other senior-level post in a correctional system was the end result of several decades "in the trenches." By the time leaders took on their new roles, there was not much that they had not seen or experienced. In addition, correctional officials could often act relatively independently--as institutions operated with far less scrutiny and oversight than they do today. However, the internal and external demands on these leaders have increased, and correctional administrators must now be aware of a host of ways the criminal justice system impacts greater society.
