Employment references to which an employee has given consent are protected by a qualified privilege, the Connecticut Supreme Court has ruled.

The plaintiff was an officer with a university police department. After she applied for a job with a municipal police department, her supervisors at the university police department were interviewed. They intimated she had been absent from work too often, described her leadership as "poor" and stated that at times she had been "negative or uncaring." They also described her police skills as "marginal at best." Her application was rejected.
