The practice of using Internet services to deceptively conceal telephone information to bypass caller identification devices, a technique known as "caller-ID spoofing," would be banned under legislation that is moving forward on Capitol Hill.

Moreover, while the bill is primarily aimed at curbing commercial telemarketers' ability to get around telephone number identification devices that allow people to screen out unwanted solicitations, a proposed amendment would broaden the measure to apply to non- commercial phone calls as well, such as those made by political organizations.
