A client once stated that people are always killing gnats with hammers. The truth of this was felt very deeply by everyone in their organization as they struggled to respond to changes in the market, changes in technology and changes in the workforce. Instead of leadership responding in a manner that would solve problems with a vision for the future, it created even worse problems by being reactive with antiquated solutions and disruptive behavior. According to Ed Oakley and Doug Krug, authors of Enlightened Leadership, enlightened leaders are leaders who do not only have a vision but who have the ability to get the members of the organization to assume ownership for the vision as their own, thus developing the commitment to carry that vision through to completion. Enlightened leaders, not only encourage others to work this way, they practice these traits themselves.
