B.Z. Lee has been a public accountant for 40 years and has served on the AICPA's board of directors, was chairman of BDO International and was AICPA deputy-chairman in public affairs. Lee sees increased competition in accounting as removing the collegiality between firms which has caused an increase in commerciality. He believes opportunities abound but that they come with risks especially of increased liability. Lee wants accountants to move a step ahead of the government in improving accountancy before problems develop into crises such as the savings and loan crisis.

As his remarkable career in public service winds down, B.Z. Lee, former chairman of BDO International, former chairman of the American Institute of CPAs board of directors and retiring head of the Institute's Washington office and AICPA deputy chairman-public affairs, consented to a departing interview.
