Accessing information about North Carolina offenders on the Web.

The North Carolina Department of Correction's (DOC) offender management software, while recently developed, is not the newest technology. It runs on a large, central mainframe, and when DOC employees use the software, they see a screen filled with characters -- no graphics, no point-and-click. Old fashioned "dumb" terminals, of which a number remain, work just fine.

But the wide range of business functions in corrections is fully reflected in the software. Consequently, the data the software generates and stores are rich. They are stored in a modern, relational database that makes it easy to query, and easy to link data elements.
