Ideology and Pragmatism in Iran's Foreign Policy

This essay hypothesizes that the tension between religious ideology and pragmatism has persisted throughout Iranian history. The Iranian Revolution simply put it on graphic display in the contemporary period. The essay also suggests that the dynamic processes of cultural maturation seem to be shifting the balance of influence increasingly away from religious ideology toward pragmatic calculation of the national interest in the making and implementation of foreign policy decisions. The obvious...

Wanting to Have Their Cake and Their Neighbor's Too: Azerbaijani Attitudes Towards Karabakh and Iranian Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan's foreign policy agenda, even prior to independence in 1991, has been largely dominated by two main issues: how to regain the Armenian-occupied region of Nagorno-Karabakh, and what relationship the state should have with the millions of ethnic Azerbaijanis who live in the bordering provinces of Iran. Over the past decade, two schools of thought have emerged, which reflect not only two different approaches to these issues, but also two opposing notions of what constitutes the Azerba...

Re-Legitimizing Anti-Semitism: Not the Time for Silence

Foxman responds to Duncan Clarke's essay about anti-semitism and US-Israel relations. Foxman claims that his record is clear on such matters and is reflected in their approach to the Internet. Hate speech, including anti-Semitism and extreme anti-Israel messages, abound and must be countered, but he has never called for censorship. Clarke's effort to depict him otherwise is one of Clarke's many inaccuracies and distortions.

For a White Revolution: John F. Kennedy and the Shah of Iran

The story of American relations with Iran during the Kennedy administration is one of misunderstandings and missed opportunities. Shah Muhammad Reza Pahlavi often manipulated and thwarted Kennedy's policy toward Iran and used American fears of Communism to gain increased financial aid and military support. Disagreements among US policy-makers also contributed to an inconsistent policy toward Iran. These factors resulted in the bolstering of a dictatorship out of touch with the Iranian people,...

A Culture of Poverty or the Poverty of a Culture? Informal Settlements and the Debate Over the State-Society Relationship in Egypt

Problems facing informal ("squatter") settlements in Egypt have increasingly gained public exposure through both media coverage and scholarly debates. Whereas the state public discourse reflects a pretence for developing these areas, this paper, through the study of the relationship between the state and members living in three urban squatter areas, argues that government response towards squatters takes the following forms: negligence, demolition, relocation, and exploitation. Whereas demoli...
