Using Lamp Applications to Make Our Library Shine

To implement the prepackaged programs we discussed-[Plone], LiveHelp!, and OTRS-we simply downloaded and installed the files on the servers. Once installed, we proceeded to edit the configurations and customize each program. For example, in Plone we used a themebuilding plug-in to edit the default lay-out and to fit our staff's vision of our Web site. It also called the time before preservation anxiety became ubiquitous "the digital dark ages." Of course, the U.S. started its American Memory program...

Computers In Small Libraries

Linux Adventures On a Laptop

So the question remained: How was I going to integrate Linux into my computing life? And then the opportunity to write Computers in Small Libraries came along. As I contemplated the actual computing needs of this column, I realized that I wouldn't require anything more than a wireless laptop, a word processor that produces Microsoft Word documents, and a USB keychain drive. I was sure that Linux and the OpenOffice suite could take care of these needs. Roberts admits his love/hate relationship...
