Court Plan Change Clears Missouri House Panel
A proposal to change the Nonpartisan Court Plan sailed through a committee of the Missouri House on Monday, moving it one step closer to going before voters later this year. The resolution, which would give sitting governors more control over their appointees to the appellate courts, was passed on a 9-4 party-line vote. The Senate approved the same resolution last week.
Occupy St. Louis Protesters to Get Jury Trials
The 27 Occupy St. Louis protesters arrested during the early morning hours of Nov. 12 will have a chance to defend themselves in jury trials. On Monday, St. Louis Municipal Court Judge Gordon D. Schweitzer Jr. certified the protesters' cases to the St. Louis Circuit Court.
Colleagues Recall St. Louis Attorney Jack Pruellage's Tenacity, Business Acumen
John "Jack" Pruellage was big, brainy and well-loved by those who knew him. He spent his entire 42-year legal career at St. Louis- based Lewis, Rice & Fingersh, where he led the firm as chairman for the past 22 years. He died Saturday at 71. After a brief illness, Pruellage died peacefully at home surrounded by family, his family said in a statement passed along by Julie Lilly, chief operating officer for Lewis Rice.
A challenge to Missouri's practice of lethal injection is moot because the state has run out of the drug used as an anesthetic and can't obtain any more, a federal appeals court said Monday. The suit had been brought by a group of death row inmates who alleged that they suffered a risk of severe pain during executions because the state uses nonmedical personnel to administer the lethal drugs in a manner not approved by the Food and Drug Administration or the drugs' manufacturers.
Group Hopes $750,000 Helps St. Louis-Area Startups Grow Up
Whether 15 relatively new businesses can survive and grow remains to be seen. But they are already winners in one respect. Arch Grants, a not-for-profit organization that promotes local entrepreneurship, has provided 15 startups with $50,000 each to help them grow their businesses. The organization announced the winners of its international competition Monday at the law offices of Polsinelli Shughart in downtown St. Louis.
